– CrownMass, Version 3.1.49
In CrownMass, a problem was detected with the programming of the
equation for the 3”+ material for Singleleaf Pinyon and Utah Juniper. For the needles, 1-hr, 10-hr and 100-hr
timelag fuels, the equations were correct. Hence all crown weight and canopy fire calculations were
correct since it is assumed for
both of these species all of the 3”+ material is in the bole. The reason for this assumption is based
on the way the researchers sampled the tree data. If a user used the 3”+ in an analysis in the past, the user
should rerun that cm3 file using Version 3.1.49. In addition, the problem resulted in no change in the 3”+
material deposited to the surface with changes in the Surface Deposition
Remaining on the Ground pulldown for
3”+ material.
Note that since CrownMass assumes due to research data
collection methods that the 3”+ material is in the bole, the default
assumption as with all species is that all bole material is removed from
the site (a logging assumption).
This means that if the analysis assumption is for the boles to remain on
site, the user needs to change the Surface Deposition Remaining on the Ground
pulldown for Boles Left Proportion from 0.00 to a number between 0.01 and 1.00
to reflect the user’s assumption for boles remaining on site.
To obtain a copy of version 3.1.49 of the cm3.exe file, go to the FMAPlus
3 Support Page and download the exe file. Copy the exe file to the folder where FMAPlus 3 is installed
replacing the existing cm3.exe.
This is the folder that has all of the program executable (*.exe) files.
If the user desires, the user can uninstall and reinstall FMAPlus to implement
these changes. The user should log
on with administrative privileges, uninstall FMAPlus and then reinstall FMAPlus
to C:\Program Files\FMAPlus 3\.
The installation should be done using the most current installing file,
which can be downloaded from http://www.fireps.com/fmanalyst3/download.htm.

– CrownMass, Version 3.0.47
In CrownMass, a problem was detected on the import of a FVS tree list
file. The Other tree code (OT) in
some variants was being mapped to species TSME and it should have been mapped
to TSHE. This has been
corrected. Also, trees that are
shown as dead in the list now are imported with a dialog telling the user that
adjustments are necessary for the dead tree’s fraction remaining in crown
fields.
An enhancement has been made so the user can now select more than one
tree on the Analysis Area and Plots screen and delete these multiple trees at
the same time by clicking on the Delete button.
To obtain a copy of version 3.0.47 of the cm3.exe file, go to the FMAPlus
3 Support Page and download the exe file. Copy the exe file to the folder where FMAPlus 3 is installed
replacing the existing cm3.exe.

In CrownMass, the import of tree structural stage had defaulted to
dominant (D) and has been fixed to import the code for the tree structural
stage in the Tree Class Table.
In addition, an enhancement has been added. On the Assumptions Tab, there are boxes where the use can
adjust the calculated canopy base height and canopy bulk density by a
proportion. To get this enhancement, the user will need to obtain the latest
cm3.exe and CM3Master.mdb files.
To obtain a copy of version 3.0.44 of the cm3.exe file, go to the FMAPlus

executable (*.exe) files.
3/10/2009
– FMAPlus Installation Location
Recently, the Forest Service has implemented a change to access
privileges to the C:\. The default
install folder for FMAPlus has been C:\FMAPlus 3\. When attempting to run programs when not logged in as
an administrator, program errors have been reported due to lack of the ability
of the program to read and write files to the computer.
The solution is to log on with administrative privileges, uninstall
FMAPlus and then reinstall FMAPlus to C:\Program Files\FMAPlus 3\. The installation should be done using
the most current installing file, which can be downloaded from http://www.fireps.com/fmanalyst3/download.htm.
Change all shortcuts you may have to point to C:\Program
Files\FMAPlus 3\. Past data files
will still be available from the previous Data folder (C:\FMAPlus
3\Data\). Follow the instructions
in the Getting Started section of the Users’ Guide to set the correct path for
Photo Images (C:\Program Files\FMAPlus 3\PhotoImages\). If you have copied the photos to
C:\FMAPlus 3\PhotoImages\, move them to C:\Program Files\FMAPlus
3\PhotoImages\).

– FMMgr, Version 3.0.3
One bug fixes was made in the Fuel Model Manager (FMMgr) program. Clicking on the button with a “t” on
them caused a runtime error. That
problem is fixed. To obtain a copy
of Version 3.0.3 of the fmmgr3.exe file, go to the FMAPlus
3 Support Page and download the file. Copy the file to the folder where FMAPlus 3 is installed and
replace the existing fmmgr3.exe file.
This is the folder that has all of the program executable (*.exe) files.
1/28/2006
– CM3, Version 3.0.17
Four bug fixes were made in the CM3 program and enhancements were
made. An intermittent problem with
opening *.cm3 analysis area file that were created using a beta version of the
program was fixed.
Two display issues on the Fire Behavior Tab were fixed. These display issues occurred when an
analysis with no trees on any plots was opened immediately following the
opening of an analysis file which did have trees in plots. In some cases, the display of the
Canopy Bulk Density (CBD) on the Fire Behavior Tab was not correct. This was simply a display of a CBD
value error. All calculations of
fire behavior and fire type were correct.
The correct CBD is displayed on the Canopy Characteristics Tab and has
been used in all fire behavior calculations. Users who have recorded the CBD values from the Fire
Behavior Tab for future use should open the cm3 data file with version 3.0.17
and record the correct CDB value.
An enhancement has been made to assist user entering field inventory
data for Pinyon and Juniper species.
The crown weight equations for these species require the use of the
crown diameter. Most inventories
do not report this value for sample trees. Using the sample tree data from the publication documenting
these crown weight equations, relationships have been developed to predict
crown diameter from diameter breast height (DBH) and tree height. Hence in Version 3.0.17, the user no
longer needs to enter crown diameter for these species on the Analysis Area and
Plots Tab. To obtain
a copy of Version 3.0.17 of the cm3.exe file, go to the FMAPlus
3 Support Page and download the file. Copy the file to the folder where FMAPlus 3 is installed and
replace the existing cm3.exe file.
This is the folder that has all of the program executable (*.exe) files.
12/27/2005
– CM3, Version 3.0.10
Two bug fixes were made in the CM3 program. A problem was discovered that caused a
failure to save a file due to a NULL(Blank) entry in one of the data entry
fields. This problem has been fixed so that NULL entries if they occur
will be handled without an error.
In the special case where the Crowning Index is less than the Torching
Index, all possible situations were can be addressed when the fire behavior was
calculated. This problem has been
fixed. To
obtain a copy of Version 3.0.10 of the cm3.exe file, go to the FMAPlus
3 Support Page and download the file. Copy the file to the folder where FMAPlus 3 is installed and
replace the existing cm3.exe file.
This is the folder that has all of the program executable (*.exe) files.
11/15/2005
– FMMgr3, Version 3.0.2
Two bug fixes were made in the FMMgr3 program. A created custom fuel model could not
be deleted and that has been corrected.
Each time the program was started, a new empty fuel model set was
created. This problem has been
corrected. To obtain a copy of
this file, go to the FMAPlus
3 Support Page to download the file. Copy the file to the folder where FMAPlus 3 is installed and
replace the existing FMMgr3.exe file.
This is the folder that has all of the program executable (*.exe) files.
9/27/2005
– CM3FBLogMaster.mdb file
A column in the CM3FBLogMaster.mdb file was not wide enough to accept
the 2005 FBPS fuel model identifier. To obtain a copy of the updated CM3FBLogMaster.mdb
file, go to the FMAPlus
3 Support Page to download the file. Copy the file(s) to the folder where FMAPlus 3 is
installed. If the user already has
a log file started with past runs, the user will need to start a new fire
behavior log file.
9/09/2005
– CM3, CM3FBLogMaster.mdb file
The CM3FBLogMaster.mdb file was not included in the Installation file
for FMAPlus 3. To obtain a copy of
this file, go to the FMAPlus
3 Support Page to download the file. Copy the file to the folder where FMAPlus 3 is
installed. This is the folder that
has all of the program executable (*.exe) files.

Problems,
Fixes and Enhancements Described Below are for FMAPlus, Version 2
03/15/2004
- CM
In CrownMass Version 1.1.108, changes have been made to enhance the
error checking of data entries on the Analysis Area and Plots screen. Also, changes have been made to support
data entry of the 20-foot windspeed and dry bulb temperature on the Environment
Tab.
02/09/2004
– CM and DspClock
In CrownMass Version 1.1.107, enhancements have been made to allow for
both pulldown and manual entry of all values on the Analysis Area and Plots
Tab. In addition, changes have
been made to the handling of the situation where the surface fire rate of
spread is greater than the maximum crown rate of spread. CrownMass now displays a warning to
this effect and suggests the environmental conditions are unrealistic.
In Dispatcher’ Clock, Version 2.1.10, the
sunrise/sunset tables have been updated to be produced through 2010.
01/19/2004
- CM
In CrownMass Version 1.1.101, changes have been made to the default
values and performance of the Surface Deposition columns on the Analysis Area
and Plots Tab. Recent user
feedback indicates that, at times, changes were being made to these values to
model fuel treatments. Depending
on the changes, incorrect estimates of canopy and surface fuels could occur.
The changes made in Version 1.1.101 will eliminate the potential for accidental
errors and also strengthen the ability of the program to model fuel treatments.

– CM, V2
In CrownMass
Version 1.1.94, changes have been made to the calculation of crown weights for Eastside
and Westside Douglas-fir and Western Hemlock. The crown weight equations
in CrownMass were coded in 2000 to parallel those in the Federal agency debris
prediction programs. For Pacific Northwest (Westside) Douglas-fir and Western
Hemlock, the equations in the Federal agency debris prediction programs were
from Estimating the Weight of Crown Segments for Old Growth Douglas-fir and
Western Hemlock (Snell and Max, RP-PNW-329, January 1985). Prior to this
publication, the equations for the Pacific Northwest (Westside) Douglas-fir and
Western Hemlock were from Predicting Crown weight of Coast Douglas-fir and
Western Hemlock (Snell and Anholt, RP-PNW-281, March 1981). The equations in
RP-PNW-329 significantly over-predict crown weights for trees less than 10
inches DBH. In addition, the equations in RP-PNW-329 were used to
calculate crown weights for Intermountain (Eastside) Douglas-fir and Western
Hemlock for DBH values greater than 34 and 32 inches respectively. This
resulted is significant changes in crown weights at this crossover DBH values.
In CrownMass Version 1.1.94, the following changes have been made:
The equations for Pacific Northwest (Westside) Douglas-fir crown weights have
been changed to use RP-PNW-281 (1981) for DBH values from 0-18 inches. For DBH
values greater than 18 inches, the equations in RP-PNW329 (1985) are used.
The equations for Intermountain (Eastside) Douglas-fir, the equations in
RP-PNW-329 were used to calculate crown weights for trees greater than 34
inches DBH. This created a significant weight decrease at the transition
DBH value. With this version of CrownMass, the equations for Intermountain
Douglas-fir crown weights have been changed to use RP-PNW-281(1981) for DBH
values greater than 34 inch DBH.
The equations for Pacific Northwest (Westside) Western Hemlock crown weights
have been changed to use RP-PNW-281 (1981) for all DBH.
The equations for Intermountain (Eastside) Western Hemlock, the equations in
RP-PNW-329 were used to calculate crown weights for trees greater than 32
inches DBH. This created a significant weight increase at the transition
DBH value. With this version of CrownMass, the equations for Intermountain
Western hemlock crown weights have been changed to use RP-PNW-281(1981) for DBH
values greater than 32 inch DBH.
4/25/2003 –

caused a Crown Rate of Spread to be displayed when fire type was Surface
instead of zero. Download CM
1.1.89.
1/14/2003 -- DDWPC
Changes made to correct a problem with the calculation of foliage/needles. Download DDWPC 1.2.34 for the corrected application
6/28/2002 -- CM
Changes made to develop version 1.1.84 failed
to deal with a potential divide by zero situation when the Fire Behavior Tab
was click on. Version 1.1.86 fixes this problem.
6/2/2002 -- CM
The calculation of Crown Fraction Burned (CFB) on the Fire Behavior Tab has been using an equation from Van Wagner (1977, 1993). The Farsite program (Finney 1998) implements CFB in a slightly different manner and this change in CrownMass, Version 1.84, implement fully the Farsite process. CFB calculations prior to Version 1.84 will be higher than those calculated with Version 1.84. The change only effects the crown fire rate of spread if an Active Crown Fire predicted by CrownMass.
5/12/2002 -- CM:
On the Analysis Area and Plots screen, the text box for Area Name allows for text up to 50 characters in length, including spaces. The text box allowed the user to enter more than 50 characters. When any process, such as calculations, was implemented which required writing information to the database, an error occurred. The program will no longer allow the user to enter more than 50 characters in the Area Name field.
4/3/2002 -- CM:
When entering loading in the Surface Fuel Model tab for current surface loading you were only able to enter whole number. This has been fixed to allow the entry of numbers containing fractional values. Please download CM version 1.1.80.
4/3/2002 -- CM:
A number of changes have been incorporated into this version of Crown Mass (CM) version 1.1.78.
Plot Canopy Base and Ceiling Heights
The method for handling Canopy Base(CBH) and Ceiling Heights(CCH) in plots where the one foot bulk density does not exceed the Critical Bulk Density identified on the Assumptions Tab has been changed. Instead of using an average of the stand heights as a surrogate, the CBH and CCH are now not calculated and indicated as such by an N/C (not calculable) in the appropriate boxes. This also affects the Analysis Area’s CBH and CCH values. If no plots have a one foot bulk density that exceeds the Critical Bulk Density, then the CBH and CCH values for the Analysis Area are marked N/C. Only those plots in an Analysis Area that have a one foot bulk density that exceeds the Critical Bulk Density are used to compute the Analysis Area’s CBH and CCH. This has a corresponding effect of the statistics for CBH. Warnings have been added to alert users any plots that did not meet the CBD.
In addition, Stand Height for each Plot and Analysis Area has been added. Several minor fixes have also been included in this release including the Tab progression order on the Environment Tab.
3/12/2002 -- DDWPC:
The total area tons per acre on the summary
graph and on the loading report did
not include needles. This has been fixed in 1.2.32
1/23/2002 -- CM:
CM was not accepting the number of trees per
acre to the level of
resolution should in the FVS tree list. It was rounding up resulting in an
overestimation of tree per acre. All past FVS imports should be re-evaluated.
Start with a New CrownMass Inventory and import the FVS tree list.
Perform a new analysis using this CM 1.69 and the new FVS import.
1/9/2002 -- CM:
